DIY pine cone hedgehog
Supplies Needed:
- Pinecones (various sizes for different hedgehog personalities!)
- Light brown or beige felt fabric
- Small black beads (for eyes and nose)
- White acrylic paint
- Silver glitter
- Fabric glue or strong craft glue (PVA glue can also work)
- Embroidery thread or twine (for hangers)
- Wooden clothing pins (optional, for standing hedgehogs)
- Scissors
- Small paintbrush for dry-brushing
Step 1: Prepare the Pinecone & Face Material
Step 1: Paint the Pinecone "Belly"
Mix: Mix a small amount of White Paint with Glitter .
Apply: Use a dry brush to gently paint the mixture onto the tips of the pinecone scales, focusing on the flatter, wider end. This creates a frosted "belly" effect.
Dry: Set aside and allow the paint to dry completely.
Step 2: Create the Felt Face Cone
Cut: Cut a small square of Felt Fabric (approx. 2cm x 2cm) for each face.
Roll: Apply a small dot of White Glue to one corner, then roll the felt tightly into a cone shape. Secure the edge with more glue to form the snout.
Step 3: Add Eyes and Nose
Nose: Glue one small Bead to the pointed tip of the felt cone to create the nose.
Eyes: Glue the remaining two Beads slightly above the nose for the eyes. The placement determines the hedgehog's expression.
Step 4: Attach the Face and Add Ears
Glue Face: Apply a generous amount of White Glue to the flat, loose end of the felt cone. Firmly press the face onto the pointed (unpainted) end of the pinecone.
Ears: Using the Felt Fabric offcuts, cut two tiny semi-circles. Glue these around the top of the face cone to create the ears. Let the assembly dry completely.
Step 5: Prepare the Hanger or Base
For Hanging: Cut a length of Thread/Twine , tie the ends to form a loop, and cover the knot with a large amount of White Glue . Use a tool to push the knot and glue securely down between the top scales of the pinecone.
For Standing: Glue a small Craft Peg securely to the flat base of the pinecone.
Dry: Allow the hanger or peg to dry for at least 1-2 hours to ensure a secure connection.
Step 6: Display Your Hedgehog
Your Pinecone Hedgehog is now complete! Once the glue is fully cured, you can hang it from your tree using the twine loop or have it sit on a shelf using the craft peg base.
The estimated cost to make each Pinecone Hedgehog ornament is between $0.45 and $0.90, based on purchasing supplies like glue and beads in bulk.
